AI Model Improves Injury Prediction in Women's Elite Football AI Model Improves Injury Prediction in Women's Elite Football

A new study by the University of Bonn, ISGlobal, the Barça Innovation Hub, and Made of Genes provides a new scientific perspective on the accumulation of injury-risk in elite women´s football

An international team of researchers led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and the University of Bonn—with participation from the Barça Innovation Hub (BIHUB), FC Barcelona’s medical department, and the company Made of Genes—has developed a computer-based approach that improves injury prediction in elite women’s football. The study, published in “npj Digital Medicine,” combines artificial intelligence, survival analysis, statistical calibration, and decision theory to transform risk prediction into a useful tool for clinical and sports practice.

The study introduces a novel AI-based framework for predicting injury risk in professional sports, combining survival analysis, improved statistical calibration, and decision theory to provide reliable injury probabilities and actionable recommendations on when players should rest. Using four seasons of data from FC Barcelona’s women’s football team, the researchers demonstrated that the new approach outperforms traditional machine learning models, identifying cumulative fatigue, particularly distance covered over the preceding 21 days, as the strongest predictor of injury risk. The framework has the potential to improve injury prevention and player availability in professional sports, with possible applications in amateur sports and physically demanding occupations.
